A Poem in Five Short Chapters: Patience in Personal Development

Impatient with your personal development goals? You’re not alone. Many of my clients feel the same way. Insights can spark a change in belief instantly, but behavior? That takes a bit more time to catch up. To illustrate this journey, I often share the following poem. It’s a favorite of mine, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS

by Portia Nelson

I

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk

I fall in.

I am lost … I am helpless.

It isn’t my fault.

It takes me forever to find a way out.

II

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in the same place, but it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

III

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it is there.

I still fall in … it’s a habit.

My eyes are open

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

IV

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

V

I walk down another street.

The Real Lesson Here

Personal development is a journey. Just like in this poem, you may find yourself repeatedly falling into the same “holes” before you learn to avoid them. And that’s okay. Each step, each chapter, brings you closer to walking down a different street altogether.

Next Steps: Embrace the Process

My approach focuses on uncovering what’s holding you back and helping you develop your own path to success. Patience and self-awareness are key. Remember, it’s not about never falling; it’s about getting up quicker each time and eventually choosing a new path.
