Are You Spinning Your Wheels?

Ever feel like you’re working hard but not getting anywhere? One of my clients mentioned this during a coaching session today. I shared an exercise with him that left him shocked into action. I thought I’d share it here and see what feedback you all have.

Step One: Get in the Zone

Find a relaxed, focused state. Forget about the 101 emails in your inbox or the dozen calls you need to make. Clear your mind.

Step Two: List Your Top Priorities

Write down your top ten priorities or goals. Follow the usual brainstorming rules—no pausing for evaluation. Just write down whatever comes to mind. Typically, I start with business priorities and then move into personal life, but for this exercise, don’t limit yourself.

Step Three: Take a Break

Go grab a coffee (or your drink of choice). I drink a lot of coffee during coaching, but anything that gives you a short break works.

Step Four: Reflect on Your Recent Activities

Think back over the last couple of weeks. Jot down how you’ve spent your time and assign rough percentages to each activity.

Step Five: Compare Your Lists

  • How much of your time have you spent on your priority goals?
  • Are there goals you’ve not worked on at all?
  • What have you spent time on that doesn’t appear on your priority list?

Step Six: Adjust Your Focus

Decide how you will adjust your focus for the next couple of weeks.

Step Seven: Share Your Plan

Drop a comment and let me know what changes you’re going to make (if any, of course).

The Real Lesson Here

Like most exercises I take clients through, this one is simple but tends to have a major impact. It’s a great way to realign your actions with your goals.

Next Steps: Aligning Actions with Priorities

At Your Business Mindset, we focus on getting to the root of performance issues. We won’t teach your team new techniques; instead, we identify what’s holding them back. Each person will then develop their own system to meet the business’s needs. When people create their own solutions, they take ownership and drive their performance.
